Gloria Steinem: From Undercover Bunny to Feminist Icon
Gloria Steinem, born March 25, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, became a leading feminist through investigative journalism and activism. After graduating magna cum laude from Smith College in 1956 and studying in India, she worked as a freelance writer for Esquire, The New York Times, Glamour, and Show Magazine. In 1963, her undercover exposé 'I Was a Playboy Bunny' revealed poor working conditions at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club, launching her feminist voice. She co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus in July 1971 in Washington DC with Shirley Chisholm, Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug, and Fannie Lou Hamer. That same year, she co-founded Ms. magazine. Steinem championed reproductive rights, equal pay, the Equal Rights Amendment (first proposed in 1923, still unratified), and LGBTQA+ rights. She openly discussed her own abortion at age 22. Her activism contributed to the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (1974) and birth control access for unmarried women (Eisenstadt v. Baird, 1972). Steinem remains a vocal advocate for gender equality and climate action.
