Global South Embraces AI for Practical Gains Amid Western Skepticism

Young, developing nations are prioritizing AI for practical applications to address immediate challenges, contrasting with Western pessimism focused on risks like bias and environmental impact. Countries including Ethiopia, Pakistan, India, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia have implemented policies such as Digital Ethiopia 2030 and Pakistan’s National AI Policy 2025, aiming to enhance healthcare, education, agriculture, taxation, and disaster management. In agriculture-based economies, AI-driven precision farming boosts production and climate resilience, directly impacting food security for billions. Medical AI improves diagnosis and coverage in underserved communities, while adaptive learning platforms address literacy and skills gaps. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, argues at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that AI benefits could be greater in the Global South by tackling obstacles to growth.
