Glasstire Commissions Photos of Texas Artist-Run Spaces for 25th Anniversary

As part of its 25th anniversary, Glasstire is commissioning photographers to document over 80 influential figures in Texas art. The third round of photographs focuses on the theme "Built, Not Bought: Artist-Run Spaces," featuring past and present venues. The Joanna in Houston (2007–2014) was run by Cody Levina and Brian Rod as a home and exhibition space. Box 13 ArtSpace, founded in 2008 by eight artists evicted from Commerce Street Artists Warehouse, now houses three galleries and 18 studios. 500X, founded in 1978 by Will Hipps and Richard Childers, is one of Texas's oldest artist-run galleries, currently hosting events at partner venues in Dallas. Okay Mountain, established in Austin in 2006, closed its gallery in 2012 but remains active; in 2009–2010 it received a Blanton Museum commission, had a New York show reviewed by The New York Times, and won the Pulse Prize. MASS Gallery, founded in 2006 by University of Texas students, now operates at 705 Gunter Street and focuses on social action with LGBTQ+ partners. Sala Diaz, founded in 1995 by Alejandro Diaz in San Antonio, expanded to include Casa Chuck residency in 2012; Ethel Shipton became director in 2023, and the space received significant Ruth Foundation grants. K Space Art Studios in Corpus Christi, established in 1995, opened K Space Contemporary gallery in 2007 and runs educational programs including a Summer Mural Arts Program and Dia de los Muertos Festival.
