Glasgow Cultural Hub Tenants Protest Major Rent Increases by City-Managed Landlord

Tenants at Glasgow's Trongate 103 arts center are protesting substantial rent hikes imposed by City Property, an organization managing buildings for Glasgow City Council. The increases, described as unsustainable by tenants, have sparked demonstrations and political intervention. Scottish Labour MSP Paul Sweeney raised the issue in Holyrood, noting that seven cultural organizations face additional annual costs of £700,000, representing quadrupled rents and tenfold service charges. The building, renovated in 2009 with £8 million in public funds, houses significant cultural institutions including Transmission Gallery, Street Level Photography, and Glasgow Print Studio. City Property denies eviction claims, stating that lease termination notices are standard procedure during renewals and that new rates remain below market value. Mark Langdon of Glasgow Media Access Centre described the process as coercive and unfair after being given only four weeks to decide following 17 years in the building. Other organizations, including Turning Point Scotland, report similar disputes with City Property over charges and maintenance issues. Critics describe City Property as operating without adequate oversight, with concerns that vulnerable organizations across Glasgow face similar pressures. The Scottish Greens are proposing a council motion for better oversight of such arm's-length organizations. City Property maintains it follows council policies and acts professionally, with full accountability to its board comprising elected officials and council officers.
