Ghislaine Fremaux's "Luminal Self" at Texas Tech Satellite Gallery Visualizes GI Disorders

Key facts

• "Luminal Self: Endoscopy and A New Body Image" is on view at the Texas Tech University Satellite Gallery in Lubbock through October 22.
• The exhibition is a collaboration between artist Ghislaine Fremaux, Dr. Marc Zuckerman (gastroenterologist at TTUHSC El Paso), and Nancy Casner (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator at TTUHSC El Paso).
• Six patients with GI disorders contributed drawings; Fremaux created 63-by-75-inch oil paintings based on endoscopic images of their GI tracts.
• GI conditions represented include hiatal hernia, polyps, diverticulosis, H. pylori gastritis, GAVE, and erosive esophagitis.
• The project aims to promote empathy, dialogue, and body literacy, and combat social stigmatization of GI disorders.
• Fremaux argues that representational painting mediates visceral realities into sensuous abstraction while remaining accurate.
