Gewerbemuseum Winterthur's 'Bricks Reloaded' Explores Brick as Design Element

The Gewerbemuseum Winterthur has launched an expanded design exhibition titled 'Bricks Reloaded,' featuring some 50 works that examine the brick's role as a material, design element, and bearer of cultural significance. The exhibition traces the history of bricks from antiquity to contemporary construction, highlighting their use in shaping buildings, neighborhoods, and cities. It also addresses how industrialization and new ecological challenges have transformed brick production, from handmade solid bricks to large insulating blocks. The show includes a quote from architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe: 'Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together.' The exhibition is currently on view at the museum in Winterthur, Switzerland.
