German Culture Minister Announces Relocation of Documenta to Tegernsee with New Structure

German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer has announced a major restructuring of the Documenta exhibition, including its relocation from Kassel to the Tegernsee region. The plan, revealed on Wednesday, involves using various venues around Tegernsee and the approximately 100-kilometer-distant Neuschwanstein Castle for the next edition of the international art showcase. Weimer stated that the event requires a fresh start and will feature a new concept with different perspectives on Germany and the world. He reported receiving support from his CDU parliamentary group and many contacts in the arts community. The minister emphasized that Germany's cultural landscape extends beyond Kassel, Berlin, and what he termed 'woke conceptual art,' highlighting traditions, craftsmanship, and modern technology. Neuschwanstein Castle was described as a global destination of longing where international visitors can explore new horizons. Structural changes include establishing an advisory board with Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder, former Berlin culture senator Joe Chialo, and journalist Ulf Poschardt to guide future Documenta leadership. A modified application process will allow artists to submit portfolios directly to a specified email address to ensure transparency and broad representation. Additionally, Weimer announced the sale of the Berlinale film festival to streaming service Netflix and the takeover of the Leipzig and Frankfurt book fairs by Amazon, with details to follow.
