Genji Kyoto Hotel Integrates Heian-Era Design Principles Through Contemporary Architecture

Genji Kyoto, a boutique hotel in Kyoto's Shimogyo-ku district, opened in April 2022 as a member of Design Hotels. The property reinterprets traditional Heian-period machiya townhouses through modern architectural approaches. Architect Geoffrey P. Moussas of Design 1st, who has resided in Kyoto since 1994, led the design, creating a structure that occupies the footprint of four historical townhouses. The hotel features two wings connected by a bridge over a Zen garden, with interior gardens on multiple levels and a rooftop garden offering city views. Material choices include concrete imprinted with cedar grain patterns, blending industrial and natural elements. Interior designer Jun Tomita oversaw the rooms, which combine tatami areas with modern comforts like floor heating. Custom furniture was crafted by Kyoto artisans from Futaba Furniture and the design duo +veve. Landscape architect Marc Peter Keane designed the gardens, including the Ukifune courtyard garden referencing a chapter from The Tale of Genji. The rooftop Sky Forest Garden features plants mentioned in the classical novel. The hotel's design incorporates washi paper windows by artist Eriko Horiki and integrates heritage objects found on site. The collaborative project involves multiple specialists working within a shared cultural framework, aiming to translate literary and architectural traditions into contemporary space without resorting to pastiche.
