Gen Z drives 38% growth in US independent cinemas since pandemic

Across the United States, independent theaters are witnessing a revival, largely fueled by Gen Z moviegoers. According to a recent survey by Art House Convergence, indie cinemas have seen a 38% increase since the pandemic, with 68% of their patrons being under 45 years old. An example of this trend is Low Cinema, a 42-seat venue opened by John Wilson in Ridgewood, New York, in spring 2025. The historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago reported over 300,000 visitors in 2025, setting a new record. Lela Meadow-Conner from Art House Convergence highlights that indie theaters are essential for cultural engagement, and Gen Z is increasingly drawn to repertory films. The coalition initiated Art House Theater Day on July 30, 2026, featuring special events at numerous locations. Director Rustin Thompson’s documentary, 'The Last Picture Shows,' which began as a tribute to small-town cinemas, transformed into a more optimistic narrative upon discovering many thriving theaters. It is set to premiere in US cinemas on July 5, 2026, with UK and Australia release dates forthcoming.
