Gemini G.E.L. Marks 60 Years as Los Angeles Printmaking Hub with Anniversary Exhibition

Gemini G.E.L., a Los Angeles-based contemporary art gallery and print workshop, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1966 by Sidney Felsen and Stanley Grinstein in partnership with master printer Kenneth Tyler, the organization has become the city's longest-running contemporary art gallery. The founders, who were fraternity brothers at USC, established the venture after discovering Tyler's print shop. Today, the family-owned business is managed by the founders' daughters and one spouse: Ayn Grinstein, Ellen Grinstein, Joni Weyl Felsen, and Suzanne Felsen. To commemorate the milestone, Gemini is presenting 'Impressions of Los Angeles: 60 Years of Printmaking,' an exhibition curated by Susan Dackerman that runs from February 23 to May 1, 2026, at the gallery's location at 8365 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. The show features a historical overview of the gallery's printmaking practice, including works by notable artists such as Frank Gehry, David Hockney, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, Sophie Calle, Tacita Dean, and Elizabeth Murray. Many pieces are being displayed publicly for the first time in decades. The gallery's significance stems from its role in advancing printmaking in the United States during the 1960s, a period when the medium was still emerging. Gemini distinguished itself by offering a wide range of techniques, from lithography and silkscreen to three-dimensional multiples, expanding possibilities for artists. The organization's partners attribute its longevity to a commitment to exceptional quality and technical innovation, noting that artists choose to collaborate with Gemini due to its ability to handle diverse media and scale under one roof. The gallery continues to focus on maintaining excellence while exploring new artistic relationships and technological advancements in printmaking.
