Gazelli Art House Acquires Former Marlborough Gallery Space in Chelsea

market-auction · 2026-07-07

Gazelli Art House has acquired the former Marlborough Gallery space in New York's Chelsea Arts Tower, marking a new chapter in the liquidation of Marlborough's legacy. After nearly 80 years of operation, Marlborough announced in April 2024 the cessation of artist representation, closure of its exhibition program, and liquidation of an inventory estimated at $250 million, following years of financial losses and internal family disputes. The 857-square-meter space spans the first and second floors, featuring 5.5-meter ceilings, a street-level loading gate for works up to 4 meters tall, direct art transport access, and a 116-square-meter private terrace on the second floor. The building, located in the heart of Chelsea's gallery district, also houses tenants including fashion designer Calvin Klein. Founded in London in 2010 by Mila Askarova, Gazelli Art House has a program spanning contemporary art and digital media, with existing spaces in London and Baku. The acquisition establishes a permanent base in the art world's center. Marlborough had moved its New York operations to Chelsea after decades in Midtown as part of a consolidation attempt, but internal conflicts, lawsuits among family members and executives, and financial decline led to its closure after nearly 80 years.
