Garibaldi Lake's 1928-1929 Rainbow Trout Stocking History

Garibaldi Lake, situated at an elevation of 1,467 meters within Garibaldi Provincial Park, spans 10 km² and was stocked with Rainbow Trout on two occasions: 5,000 eyed eggs in 1928 and 12,500 eggs in 1929, both transported by horseback. Formed by a lava flow from Mount Garibaldi that created The Barrier, the lake initially had no native fish. After three mature trout were caught in 1933, the Vancouver Province recognized it as the second successful stocking of a barren lake in British Columbia. Following the 1945 opening of Diamond Head Chalet at Elfin Lakes, plans for a chalet at Garibaldi Lake emerged, but only a hostel operated by Queen Charlotte Airline existed in the 1960s, with a helicopter company supplying air-drops.
