Gagosian Reflects on San Francisco Gallery Closure Amid Bay Area Market Challenges
In a rare interview with Elle Decor, prominent art dealer Larry Gagosian discussed his career achievements and acknowledged two unsuccessful gallery ventures. He specifically highlighted the failure of his San Francisco location, which operated from 2016 to 2021 near SFMoMA. Gagosian described the experience as disappointing, noting poor attendance at openings despite the presence of major collectors in the region. The Bay Area art market has proven difficult for several galleries, with Pace closing its Palo Alto space in 2022 after downsizing in 2018, and local galleries like Altman Siegel and Rena Bransten Gallery also shutting down recently. However, Hauser & Wirth plans to open a new Palo Alto location this year. Gagosian also mentioned his Geneva gallery, which opened in 2010 and ceased exhibitions in 2020, attributing its closure to a lack of connection with the Swiss market.
