Gagosian Paris to Exhibit Three Significant Late Works by Francis Bacon

Gagosian Gallery in Paris will present three important late paintings by Francis Bacon from April 11 to May 30, 2026. The exhibition, located at 9 Rue de Castiglione, features Study from the Human Body — Figure in Movement (1982), Study from the Human Body (1986), and Man at a Washbasin (1989-1990). This marks the first time these three works are shown together. Gallery founder Larry Gagosian noted that Paris was selected due to the city's significant influence on Bacon's life and art. Bacon had a major retrospective at the Grand Palais in 1971 and maintained strong ties to Paris from 1974 to 1987, including stays at Hôtel La Louisiane and a studio at 14 Rue de Birague. The 1982 painting, with its orange background reflecting Bacon's interest in cricket, was previously shown in a 1984 Paris exhibition that attracted large crowds. The 1986 work, with a yellow background, was included in a 2019-2020 Centre Pompidou exhibition. Man at a Washbasin revisits a motif from 1954 and was displayed at Documenta IX in 1992 shortly after Bacon's death. The exhibition highlights Bacon's connection to Paris through these late career works.
