Gagosian Gstaad shows rare Hantaï paintings from final studio years

Gagosian will present "Simon Hantaï: the last studio" at its Gstaad gallery starting July 9. Curated by Anne Baldassari, the exhibition features sixteen paintings from Hantaï's dernier atelier series (1982–85), characterized by vibrant abstract forms created through folding and dripping. These works were first shown in Hantaï's 2022 retrospective at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, also curated by Baldassari, which included a recreation of his studio. Hantaï pioneered the pliage technique, where canvas is crumpled, knotted, painted, and then unfolded to reveal patterns of pigment and reserve.
