APE Grupo's upcoming The New Habitat 27/28 report will address critical questions facing residential design as homes evolve beyond traditional functions. The report examines how design must adapt to smaller living spaces, increasing single-person households, wellness integration, sustainability implementation, and flexible layouts. According to the 2025 edition, more people now live alone than ever before, with single-person households at historic highs. The report notes that sustainable practices in housing, hospitality, offices, and retail increased from 49.8% in 2024 to 54.2% in 2025, though still below 2023's 80.9% level. Design professionals now prioritize flexibility second only to wellness considerations. The analysis highlights examples including Thai studio Buno's transformation of a one-bedroom apartment using architectural curtains, Argentina's Moob Arquitectura adding rotating wheels to staircase designs, and approaches blending domestic and collective spaces to address social isolation. The report suggests future design must move beyond spatial organization to anticipate changing lifestyles, incorporate neuroarchitecture and data-driven environmental design, and create adaptable spaces that support multiple functions without compromising living quality.
