FrogID Dataset 7.0 Releases Over 1 Million Frog Records Spanning Seven Years

publication · 2026-03-18

The Australian Museum has unveiled FrogID Dataset 7.0, which spans from November 2017 to November 2024. This publicly accessible dataset features more than 1 million validated entries for 228 species, accounting for 88% of Australia's known frogs, including the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina). Contributions came from nearly 45,000 individuals, with the Common Eastern Froglet (Crinia signifera) being the most frequently recorded at over 219,000 instances. The dataset verifies records of the Tanami Toadlet (Uperoleia micromeles). Localities of sensitive species are buffered, while critically endangered species like the White-bellied Frog (Anstisia alba) are omitted. FrogID has facilitated over 30 scientific publications and covers almost 44% of Australia, with a goal to surpass 50%. Australia is home to 259 native frog species, with one in five at risk. The announcement was made by Grace Gillard.
