Fringe Dweller Residence by Mihaly Slocombe Transforms Modest Timber House in Clifton Hill

The Fringe Dweller residence, designed by Australian architecture firm Mihaly Slocombe, is a sculptural extension that transforms a modest timber house into a definitive family home. Completed in 2023, the project is located in Clifton Hill, Australia, and covers an area of 307 square meters. The design team, led by principal architects Erica Slocombe and Warwick Mihaly, included Sinead Lim, with general contracting by Dimpat. Engineering and consultancy services were provided by Flying Yellow (environmental sustainability), PlanCost (cost engineering), Webb Consult (structural), and Statewide Geotechnical (other). The project was curated by Miwa Negoro and photographed by Tatjana Plitt. The extension is noted for balancing opposing qualities: openness with privacy, strength with softness, and a rich historical identity with the future needs of the clients.
