Friend of Manchester synagogue attacker jailed for planning terror attack on UK Defence Academy

Mohammad Bashir, 31, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a UK court on Thursday for preparing terrorist acts alongside Jihad Al-Shamie, who killed two people in a knife attack at a Manchester synagogue in October. Bashir pleaded guilty last month. In August, he drove Al-Shamie to spy on the UK's Defence Academy in Swindon, a military education institution. Prosecutors described the plan as "advanced" and potentially deadly, though Bashir was not involved in the synagogue attack. Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb stated the plan was viable and similar in method to Al-Shamie's attack. Al-Shamie was shot dead by police after his rampage.
