French sociologist Edgar Morin dies at 104

French philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin, pseudonym of Edgar Nahoum, died on Friday at age 104. A leading European intellectual of the 20th century, he developed the theory of "complex thought," challenging Cartesian reductionism. His magnum opus, "The Method," spans six volumes on knowledge, identity, and ideas. Morin taught until recently and maintained an active X profile with over 210,000 followers. Born in Paris on July 8, 1921, he joined the French Resistance during WWII, changing his surname from Nahoum to evade antisemitic persecution. He was a member of the French Communist Party but was expelled for anti-Stalinist views. Morin also pioneered cinéma vérité with Jean Rouch's 1961 documentary "Chronique d'un été."
