French Resistance: 500,000 Fought Nazi Occupation and Vichy Collaboration, 1940-1944
Between 1940 and 1944, during the German occupation of France, approximately 500,000 French individuals took up arms against both German and Italian troops, as well as local collaborators. This resistance movement ignited following France's capitulation in June 1940. Brigadier General Charles De Gaulle, who had escaped to the UK, called for resistance in a BBC broadcast and headed the Empire Defense Council. In France, groups such as the Special Organization and Combat emerged, while exiled factions also mobilized. De Gaulle formed the French National Committee, and in January 1943, Jean Moulin consolidated various networks into the Armée Secrète, leading to the establishment of the National Council of the Resistance in May. The Gestapo apprehended several leaders, while General Marie-Pierre Koenig's FFI played a crucial role in liberating Lyon and Paris. After the war, the resistance was honored, although some of its more troubling elements were often ignored.
