French Art Students Join Nationwide Protests as Louvre Closes and Heritage Sites Burn
On October 17, art students throughout France participated in nationwide demonstrations advocating for high-schoolers opposing austerity measures affecting culture and the political unrest leading up to the 2027 elections. Due to protests spearheaded by École du Louvre students, the Musée du Louvre was closed on October 19. While Art Basel Paris proceeded as scheduled, the Stan Douglas exhibition at the Jeu de Paume faced delays. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez noted 550,000 participants in Paris, though organizers estimated 800,000, and over 2,400 individuals were arrested. A grenade incident in Saint-Etienne resulted in a 17-year-old losing a hand, and significant damage was reported at Limoges town hall. On October 18, President Macron addressed the nation, recognizing the protests and calling for order.
