Frederic Church's Global Legacy Celebrated in Major Exhibition and Worldwide Museum Initiatives

An exhibition titled 'Frederic Church: Global Artist' opens May 17 at the Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, New York, challenging the provincial reputation of the Hudson River School. Co-curator Tim Barringer, a Yale University art history professor, argues the label has unfairly diminished Church's cosmopolitan and modern artistic vision, which was shaped by extensive global travels. More than 50 museums worldwide, including the Honolulu Museum of Art and Madrid's Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, are participating in special exhibitions and installations this year to honor the 200th anniversary of Church's 1826 birth in Hartford, Connecticut. The term 'Hudson River School' originated as a derogatory label in the 1870s from younger artists and critics who viewed the work of Church, his teacher Thomas Cole, and contemporaries like Albert Bierstadt and Asher B. Durand as outdated. Barringer, collaborating with co-curators Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser and Jennifer Raab, emphasizes that Church's ambitious work transcends the regional implications of the school's name. Olana, Church's former home and designed grounds overlooking the Hudson River, serves as the exhibition venue. The initiative coincides with several new publications about the artist, marking a significant reassessment of his international influence and artistic modernity.
