Fred Vargas Releases New Detective Novel 'Une unique lueur' Featuring Commissioner Adamsberg

French author Fred Vargas has published a new detective novel titled 'Une unique lueur' on April 8, marking her return to fiction after three years. The book continues the adventures of her unconventional protagonist, Commissioner Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, who investigates a series of murders targeting young women who resemble a famous Hollywood actress. Published by Flammarion, this work follows her previous police novel 'Sur la dalle,' which was the tenth installment in the Adamsberg series. Vargas, a trained scientist and archaeozoologist in her sixties, has developed a distinctive literary style she calls 'rompol'—blending detective narratives with humor and poetic elements. Her editor Teresa Cremisi notes that Vargas incorporates unusual and unexplained elements into her stories, creating a diverse cast of characters ranging from dangerous obsessives to pure souls and animals. The novel is primarily set in Paris but includes a brief segment in Los Angeles. The plot begins with the discovery of a beautiful young actress's body, described as being killed with unusual care. Adamsberg's investigation involves references to poet Gérard de Nerval, actress Lauren Bacall, and a mysterious whistle. Beyond her detective fiction, Vargas has authored two essays on climate change: 'L'Humanité en péril' in 2019 and 'Quelle chaleur allons-nous connaître? Quelles solutions pour nous nourrir?' in 2022. Her books have been translated into approximately twenty languages, adapted for film and television, and have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, making each new release a significant literary event.
