Frautz Contemporary Opens Dystopian Exhibition 'What Is Expected Is Not There' in Lübeck

Frautz Contemporary, a new gallery in Lübeck directed by art historian Azalia Shahnazari and funded by the Frautz Group, presents its second exhibition titled 'What Is Expected Is Not There' from February 21 to April 11, 2026. The show features three artists exploring dark, dystopian themes. Cuban painter Yorjander Capetillo Hernández, who lives in Lübeck, dominates the entrance with large-scale figurative paintings depicting violence, executed primarily in brown tones reminiscent of Rembrandt. His works emphasize drawing and composition, featuring expressive figures and occasional Spanish text. Hernández discusses his artistic philosophy in a lengthy English monologue titled 'Marmalade mind' on YouTube, addressing self-defense, fear, and communism. Spanish digital creator Morpho presents technical video works inspired by 3D construction drawings. Iranian artist Erfan Ashourioun from Tehran contributes nightmarish video visions, including 'The Last Letter to Mother,' which evokes unsettling imagery of snakes, spiders, or hybrid creatures. The exhibition's explanatory texts are exclusively in English. A finissage will be held on April 11, 2026, at the gallery's location at Große Burgstraße 7 in Lübeck.
