The Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) in Paris has established a complimentary remote legal consultation service for visual arts practitioners across France. The program aims to reduce inequalities in legal resource availability within the cultural field. Eligible users include artists, curators, critics, gallery owners, production spaces, and both public and private commissioners or local administrations. Consultations are conducted through 30-minute online appointments designed to provide initial case analysis and help clarify applicable regulatory frameworks. The service offers preliminary guidance and orientation rather than full legal representation or courtroom advocacy. A wide range of artistic practice issues can be addressed, encompassing intellectual and material property rights—including moral rights, resale rights, use of pre-existing content, and artificial intelligence concerns—as well as contract management for residencies, gallery collaborations, and institutional partnerships. Additional covered topics involve studio rentals, civil liability and insurance, primary and secondary art market dynamics, international artwork circulation, public procurement procedures, patronage, foundations, anti-money laundering regulations, and estate planning for artists' works. Legal support is provided by a network of specialized law firms with complementary expertise, including D4 Avocats Associés (public law), Artwork Avocats (art law and copyright), and the practice of attorney Ophélie Dantil (tax law and art market taxation). Professionals must complete a detailed request form outlining their profile and situation to access the service. The assistance is strictly preliminary; it does not include drafting legal documents or court representation and is unavailable if litigation is already underway or another lawyer is retained. Appointments are offered free of charge by Cnap within the limits of annual available resources.
