Frame in Frame: Swiss Experimental Films and Design Collide at NYCxDesign

exhibition · 2026-05-11

During NYCxDesign, designer Christian Herren curated Frame in Frame – Swiss Design in Motion, an installation featuring over 200 recently digitized Swiss experimental films. Presented by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York, the installation translates the films' rhythmic, rule-based logic into an immersive spatial environment. The films, developed at the Basel School of Design between the 1960s and 1990s, explore modularity, typography, and grid systems. Artist Daan Couzijn created film sequences that interact with Swiss furniture and lighting, including modular seating by Panter&Tourron, shelving by Ben Ganz, ZHdK, and Lehni, a sofa by Vitra, a bar by USM, a lamp by Susi and Ueli Berger, and a carpet by Trix and Robert Haussmann. The installation is on view until May 20 at the WSA 180 building in Manhattan. The Consulate General will host walkthroughs with designers Stefano Panterotto, Alexis Tourron, Ben Ganz, and ZHdK representatives. A panel discussion, Bringing Archives into the Present, moderated by Ruba Abu Nimah, is also scheduled. Photography by Matthew Gordon.
