Football's Specialized Language as American Vernacular: From CIA Stress Inoculation to Mike Tomlin's Minecraft City

In an essay for The New Yorker, the evolution of football's specialized vocabulary is examined as a uniquely American vernacular. The Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts played in London, with the Colts winning 30–13. During the game, ESPN reported that Commanders coach Dan Quinn had consulted the F.B.I. and C.I.A. for "stress inoculation" techniques to help his coordinators handle pressure. Commentator Jason Kelce, a former Philadelphia Eagles center, discussed quarterback cadence and accidentally used the team's former name, the Redskins, prompting a bet among the broadcast team. The essay argues that football is one of the few arenas where specialized language thrives without public censure, unlike art or science. It cites analyst Mina Kimes's detailed breakdown of Patrick Mahomes's play-action success and former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's Minecraft project—a city built over twelve years, featuring detailed interiors and a rooftop penthouse with a central aquarium. The piece suggests that football's intellectualism, or "ball knowledge," represents a new form of American public intellectualism, with experts like Tomlin and Kimes as its ambassadors.
