Flora Gau Launches Studio Nocturne, a Curated Space for Photography Books and Art in East London

Studio Nocturne, a new venue for rare publications and visual art, opened in late February in a De Beauvoir townhouse in East London. Founded by Flora Gau, previously co-director at Claire de Rouen and curator of the Alaïa Bookstore, the two-floor space was designed by Mitchell + Corti Architects. Gau describes the project as a personal endeavor focused on creating social and intellectual encounters rather than mere transactions. The space functions as both a curated bookshop—specializing in collectible editions, radical publishing, and poetry—and an exhibition venue for photography and visual work. Currently, unique prints by Peter Tomka are on view, and recent events included a photobook signing for Camille Bibault Waddington's 'The Office' published by Empire Books. An exhibition of work by Adémidé Udoma is scheduled for April. Gau's approach is informed by her background in photography, which she explored through self-education via books, and her professional experiences in Paris and London, including roles at Weber Gallery and autonomous curation at Alaïa Bookstore. She emphasizes that Studio Nocturne reflects her individual sensibility, with selections ranging from vintage witchcraft books to African voodoo materials and Langston Hughes editions. The space aims to serve as a platform for dialogue and connection, aligning with a broader trend toward independent, analogue experiences in East London. Gau notes the rapid three-week setup of the venue and its role in fostering community among artists and audiences.
