Flipmod Modular Shading System Designed for Subtropical Urban Spaces

Flipmod is a manually operated modular shading system created by Ambit Narrative Design (A.N.D) for subtropical urban environments. The project, scheduled for completion in 2026, introduces climate-responsive microinfrastructures into underutilized public spaces. Designed by Jiaming Liang with conceptual and schematic contributions from Jun Koike, the installation covers 20 square meters. The system responds to weather conditions through lightweight, low-impact interventions while encouraging public engagement with urban areas. Photography for the project was handled by Jiaming Liang, with Miwa Negoro serving as curator. This architectural installation represents an innovative approach to making subtropical cities more adaptable to climate variations through participatory design elements that transform everyday urban experiences.
