Five key books on Gustave Courbet selected by exhibition curators
The Museum Folkwang in Essen is hosting an exhibition called "I, Gustave Courbet: Painter and Rebel," curated by Sonja Pizonka and Anna Brohm. This event will run from July 17 to November 8 and features five important texts focused on the impactful French Realist artist. Among the highlights is Courbet's 1844 piece "Le Fou de peur," which illustrates his revolutionary approach that influenced Modernism. The readings include works like Petra ten-Doesschate Chu's "The Most Arrogant Man in France" (2007), Ségolène Le Men's "Courbet" (2007), the 1988 catalogue "Courbet Reconsidered" by Sarah Faunce and Linda Nochlin, and others by Mary Morton, Charlotte Eyerman, and Stefan Borchardt.
