First Large-Scale Greek Art Exhibition in Baltic Region Opens in Riga

The exhibition titled 'Always the Sun' will debut in Riga, representing the first major showcase of contemporary Greek art in the Baltic area. Curated by Marina Fokidis, it includes works from 27 Greek artists, whose creations are influenced by geography, light, climate, and cultural heritage. The title is inspired by a song from The Stranglers, but the exhibition examines the sun as a medium for thought and experience rather than merely a theme. It investigates how the Mediterranean's brightness and warmth shape artistic expressions and survival strategies. Fokidis notes that the sun depicted here transcends the idyllic images found in tourist brochures and modernist art. Organized by the Latvian National Museum of Art, the opening is planned for later this year, with specific dates forthcoming. This event is crucial for introducing Baltic viewers to the rich practices of contemporary Greek artists, showcasing the region's increasing interest in Mediterranean art.
