First Brazilian Museum Survey of Antiguan Artist Frank Walter Opens in Salvador

The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Bahia (MAC_BAHIA) in Salvador, Brazil, is hosting the first museum exhibition of Antiguan artist Frank Walter (1926–2009) in the country. Titled 'Frank Walter: The Philosophy of Color', the show is curated by Daniel Rangel and Barbara Paca. Salvador was chosen as the venue due to its significant African cultural heritage and the role of the African diaspora in shaping the city's identity, as well as its landscape, which resonates with the spaces Walter observed and imagined. The exhibition features a wide range of works spanning Walter's diverse practice, including landscapes that reflect his deep engagement with the natural world, figurative pieces depicting fantastic beings, self-portraits, scenes of Caribbean social life, and representations of various indigenous peoples. Walter, who was born in Antigua and worked across painting, sculpture, and photography, is known for his unique use of color and his exploration of themes related to identity, history, and the environment. This survey aims to introduce his work to Brazilian audiences and highlight the connections between the Caribbean and Brazil through shared histories of colonialism and African heritage.
