Firefighters Save Tony Cragg's Studio and Artworks in Wuppertal

A fire broke out in a container next to the studio of renowned sculptor Tony Cragg in Wuppertal, Germany, on the night of Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Approximately 100 firefighters responded and worked for four hours to extinguish the blaze, preventing it from destroying Cragg's artworks stored in the adjacent hall. The flames spread to the façade, and parts of the roof had to be removed to check for embers. Contrary to initial fears, the construction materials in the container and the façade were not asbestos-containing, posing no environmental hazard. Cragg, who has lived in Wuppertal since 1977 and is considered one of the most important contemporary sculptors, noted that ongoing roof construction likely caused the accident. He expressed relief that neighbors alerted the fire department promptly. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage remain unknown. Cragg is known for his twisted, towering bronze sculptures.
