Finland's President Dismisses Russian Attack Risk on NATO

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has publicly dismissed the notion that Russia would launch an attack on a NATO member state, stating that such a move would 'make no sense' given the alliance's military strength. In an interview with Germany's Bild newspaper, published on Saturday, Stubb said he sees 'neither evidence nor facts' to support warnings from Western officials that Russia could be ready to attack a NATO country by 2029. He emphasized that NATO, as 'the world's most powerful military alliance', possesses overwhelming conventional, missile, and nuclear capabilities, and he cited intelligence information backing his assessment. Stubb, whose country joined NATO in 2023 after abandoning its long-standing policy of neutrality following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, acknowledged that the alliance must be prepared for any scenario but expressed confidence that Moscow is not in a position to wage war against NATO. His remarks come amid heightened concerns in Europe about Russian hybrid operations, including cyberattacks, and a potential direct confrontation with the alliance. The interview was conducted against the backdrop of NATO's Eagle Spearhead drill in Cincu, Romania, on August 18, underscoring the alliance's ongoing military preparedness.
