Finland's Largest Viking-Era Silver Hoard Unearthed by Amateur Detectorist in Sysmä Forest
On September 3, 2026, Kalle Lappinen, a metal detector enthusiast, stumbled upon a remarkable cache of silver artifacts in a forest located near Sysmä, approximately 150 km north of Helsinki. He promptly alerted the regional museum, which resulted in an excavation led by archaeologist Esko Tikkala the following day. Dubbed the Sysmä treasure, the site revealed two deposits, each buried 45 cm deep in birch-bark containers and separated by 12 metres. This significant find, dating back to the late Iron Age (1000-1050 AD), yielded around 4.5 kg of coins and silver jewelry, surpassing the Nousiainen hoard discovered in 1895. The collection features coins from Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, and Islamic dirhams, while the reasons for burial remain unclear, with further excavation and analysis underway.
