Federal Judge Blocks Key Parts of Trump's Election Executive Order

A federal judge in Massachusetts blocked sections of President Donald Trump's executive order targeting mail-in voting and voter registration. District Judge Indira Talwani struck down Section 2, which required the Department of Homeland Security to create 'confirmed citizen lists,' and Section 3, which directed the US Postal Service to limit ballot mailing. She also invalidated Section 5, which mandated record preservation and enforcement of federal election laws, calling it 'merely precatory.' Talwani ruled that the president lacks constitutional authority over elections, which are reserved to states and Congress. The decision follows a separate ruling earlier in the week blocking another Trump election order. State attorneys general, including New York's Letitia James and California's Rob Bonta, praised the ruling. Voting rights groups such as the League of Women Voters and the ACLU also challenged the order. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson vowed to continue the fight, citing the proposed SAVE America Act. Trump canceled a signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill, demanding passage of the SAVE Act.
