Fabio Mauri Catalogue Raisonné Published, Retrospective Planned

The catalogue raisonné of Fabio Mauri, directed by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, has been published in print after an online release in October 2025. The volume includes over 3,600 reproduced works, with a digital version adding video documents, making it the most comprehensive publication on the Italian post-war artist. A major retrospective curated by Christov-Bakargiev will open at MAMbo in Bologna in early 2027, then travel to MUDAM Luxembourg in late spring 2027. Mauri (1926-2009) was an artist, writer, and publisher whose work centered on good and evil, ideology, and media as material objects. He was close to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italo Calvino, and Umberto Eco, and moved through Expressionism, Neo-Dada, Minimalism, and Conceptual art. His series Schermi, begun in 1957, used blank canvases with fixed screens to explore ideological conditioning. In 1971, he performed Che cosa è il fascismo, featuring fascist uniforms and a wax dummy of a general, referencing the 1938 Hitler visit to Florence. In 1973, Ideologia e natura involved a woman disrobing from a fascist uniform to reveal ideology's artificiality. The catalogue includes texts by Laura Cherubini, Francesca Alfano Miglietti, Andrea Viliani, and an interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
