Exhibition Showcasing Sámi Contemporary Art Launches in Helsinki

An exhibition titled 'We Who Remain' has opened at Kiasma in Helsinki, featuring contemporary artworks by Sámi artists and pieces that explore Sámi life across the Sápmi region. The exhibition is a collaborative presentation between Kiasma and the Sámi Museum Siida. It began at Kiasma on March 27, 2026, with additional works scheduled to be displayed at Siida in Inari starting in October. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of northern Europe, and their homeland, Sápmi, extends across parts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This exhibition emerges amid increasing international focus on the Arctic, driven by its strategic significance and natural resources. However, this heightened attention has often marginalized Indigenous perspectives, reflecting historical patterns where Sápmi was divided by national borders that still influence the area today. The show aims to highlight Sámi artistic voices and cultural narratives, providing insight into their enduring presence and contemporary expressions.
