Exercice Studio Installs Unconventional Table Tennis Tables at French School to Foster Creative Play

French architecture studio Exercice has installed four non-standard table tennis tables at a high school in Ingré, France. The project, named Ping Pong Park, aims to encourage children to invent their own rules and strategies, promoting collaborative rather than competitive play. The tables are designed as sculptural objects with distinct aesthetic identities, functioning as both autonomous artworks and social spaces. Materials used include galvanized steel and high-pressure laminate for durability. The installation is part of Exercice's ongoing research into play as a tool for social connection, which has previously resulted in adaptable playgrounds. The studio describes these pieces as 'social sculptures' that evolve through collective use. The tables are available for purchase through French brand Nedj. Specific designs include the Rebound table with raised sides, the Golf table with a narrowing center, the Rotating table for multi-player games, and the Trio table inspired by Danish artist Asger Jorn's triolectical theories. The project serves as a sculptural landmark within the school playground, intended to transform public space into a shared environment where art is actively experienced.
