EU Packaging Rules Set to Reshape Global Art Shipping by 2030
The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) became effective on 12 August 2026, influencing global companies that transport packaging through EU nations, with complete enforcement set for 1 January 2040. Companies that ship more than 1,000 kg annually are designated as "packaging producers" and are required to report on sustainability while registering for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Those shipping under 1,000 kg and "micro-organisations" are exempt. By 2028, all packaging must include comprehensive material composition labels. For both imports and exports, 40% of transport packaging is required to be reused, and 60% must adhere to recyclability standards. By 2030, plastic packaging must have 35% recycled content, increasing to 65% by 2040, with a ban on single-use plastic packaging in place by 2030.
