Etihad Rail launches UAE's first passenger train service

Etihad Rail has opened the UAE's first passenger train service, starting with a route from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah. The service, which launched today, aims to offer an alternative to car travel in a nation built around automobiles. The Abu Dhabi station at Mohammad bin Zayed City Station is understated compared to other Gulf infrastructure unveilings. Trains feature reserved seating, power sockets, Wi-Fi, and luggage space, with Premium class offering wider seats and refreshments. Introductory fares are AED55 (€13) for comfort class and AED120 (€29) for premium. The app allows booking saver, value, and flex tickets. Adhraa Almansoori, executive director of commercial at Etihad Rail Mobility, emphasized that the service gives passengers back their time. The railway aims to provide predictability amid growing congestion on roads between Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. Challenges include last-mile connectivity, as many residents will still need cars or taxis to reach stations. Etihad Rail is integrating with buses, taxis, rental cars, and local transport authorities. The first route targets leisure travel to Fujairah, with Dubai joining the network in September. Over 5,000 tickets were reserved within two days of bookings opening, and Etihad Rail became the most downloaded free app in the UAE. The service arrives amid a regional conflict that has hurt tourism and hospitality sectors.
