Essential Reading on Alexander Calder: Six Books Selected by Exhibition Curators

An exhibition titled 'Calder: Dreaming in Equilibrium' is scheduled to open at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris from April 15 to August 16. The presentation will feature nearly 300 pieces, tracing the evolution of the American sculptor's mobile works and his broader artistic output. Guest curators Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer have compiled a list of six significant publications to provide deeper insight into Calder's career and personal history. The recommended books include Jed Perl's two-volume biographical work, 'Calder: The Conquest of Time' (2017) and 'Calder: The Conquest of Space' (2020), noted for its extensive archival research. Calder's own illustrated autobiography from 1977 offers a personal perspective. 'Calder/Miró' (2004), an exhibition catalogue, examines the artistic relationship between Calder and Joan Miró. Another catalogue, 'Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture' (2015), focuses on the kinetic and theatrical aspects of his sculpture. A children's book, 'Sandy's Circus' (2008), introduces his early inventive work. The exhibition aims to showcase Calder's innovative contributions to suspended sculpture within the context of 20th-century modernism.
