Eric Besnard's Film Adaptation Focuses on Jean Valjean's Early Story from Les Misérables

French director Eric Besnard has released a new cinematic interpretation of Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Misérables, focusing specifically on the initial 150 pages of the 1,700-page work. The film, titled Les Misérables – Die Geschichte von Jean Valjean in its German release, centers on the early narrative of protagonist Jean Valjean, portrayed by actor Grégory Gadebois. Set in 1815 following Napoleon's final defeat and the Bourbon restoration, the story follows Valjean's release from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing bread to feed his family. The adaptation presents a stark, minimalist visual approach with gray-toned imagery and dark interiors, contrasting with more elaborate previous versions. Besnard, born in 1964, emphasizes the philosophical themes of Hugo's work, particularly the transformative power of compassion as demonstrated through the character of Bishop Myriel, played by Bernard Campan. The film explores Hugo's humanitarian vision, including his advocacy for the poor and his opposition to capital punishment. Originally published in 1862, Les Misérables remains a foundational text of French literature, with Hugo achieving earlier fame with Notre Dame de Paris in 1831 and receiving a state funeral in 1885.
