Enrico Donati's Surrealist-Era Collection Heads to Sotheby's with $82.3 Million Estimate

Starting May 19, Sotheby's will host an auction featuring the personal collection of Enrico Donati, often referred to as 'the last Surrealist.' Titled 'A Night in May,' the sale comprises 45 lots, showcasing pieces amassed by Donati and his spouse, Adele, with a projected total value of $82.3 million. A standout item is Pablo Picasso's 1909 artwork Arlequin (Buste), which carries an estimate of $40 million. Additional significant works include Yves Tanguy's 1939 piece Aux Aguets le Jour, valued between $800,000 and $1.2 million, and Wassily Kandinsky's 1925 creation Rote Tiefe, estimated at $12 million to $18 million. This auction follows Adele Donati's passing last year, with sales continuing through September. Donati himself passed away in 2008 and received support from André Breton in 1943.
