Enfin Levé Unveils Handbag Crafted from Lab-Grown T-Rex Leather at Amsterdam Museum

The fashion label Enfin Levé has introduced a handbag created from laboratory-cultivated leather derived from Tyrannosaurus rex collagen. This accessory is currently exhibited at the Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam, positioned alongside a cast of a T. rex specimen provided by the Naturalis Biodiversity Center. The material was developed through a collaboration involving creative agency VML, genomic engineering firm The Organoid Company, and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. Scientists reconstructed the collagen sequence from fossilized dinosaur bone fragments, which were over 68 million years old. Due to gaps in the genetic record from fossilization, researchers employed computational biology and artificial intelligence to predict and complete the missing data, resulting in a synthesized collagen blueprint. This genetic information was inserted into carrier cells, which were then cultivated using an Advanced Tissue Engineering Platform. This scaffold-free method allows cells to generate their own extracellular matrix, producing a material chemically identical to conventional animal leather. According to the company, the final product is biodegradable, repairable, and manufactured without chromium-based tanning chemicals. Enfin Levé founder Michal Hadas led the design process, emphasizing that the team studied the material's mechanical properties to let it 'define the object.' The handbag will be on display from April 2, 2026, for six weeks, after which it is slated for auction.
