Endre Aalrust's Lonely Figures at Kristiansand Kunsthall

Kristiansand Kunsthall is presenting a solo exhibition of paintings by Norwegian artist Endre Aalrust. The show features his characteristic lonely male figures, often depicted with faces obscured by mud masks, makeup, or accessories like cucumbers, reflective sunglasses, or a bandaged nose. Aalrust's work explores themes of alienation and connection, using distancing elements that also create additional surfaces for his expressive brushwork. His paintings include motifs such as a black metal fan lying in a field, a lone jonquil among tulips, and a snow-covered caravan with a smiley-face satellite dish. The artist's enjoyment of paint is evident in his soft brushstrokes and deft color use, which contrast with the deflated mood of his subjects. Aalrust frequently incorporates paintings-in-paintings, such as t-shirts featuring Michael Jordan, and invites viewers to examine tattoos or reflections in mirrors.
