Emmanuel Etienne Appointed Director of Compiègne and Blérancourt Heritage Sites

Emmanuel Etienne, a 54-year-old architect and urban planner, has been named director of the Compiègne and Blérancourt museum and estate sites, effective April 1, 2026. He succeeds Rodolphe Rapetti, a heritage conservation generalist who is retiring at age 67 after leading the sites since 2018. Etienne brings extensive experience from France's Ministry of Culture, having served as a state architect, heritage monuments conservator at the National Monuments Center, and later as deputy director of historical monuments and heritage sites within the Directorate General of Heritage and Architecture. The sites he will oversee include the Compiègne national estate, its castle museum, the National Museum of Cars and Tourism, and the Franco-American Museum at Blérancourt castle. This administrative unit employs 120 staff and operates with a budget of 4 million euros. The appointment comes amid challenges highlighted in a 2024 Court of Auditors report covering 2013-2023, which criticized fragmented management and diluted responsibilities at the sites. The court recommended setting annual objectives for the director, limiting terms to three renewable years, and clarifying the estate's status. The sites attract about 100,000 visitors annually, with nearly 60% receiving free admission and only 5% being international tourists. Under Rapetti's leadership, attendance at Compiègne castle grew by approximately 19% between 2018 and 2023. Etienne's background is strong in heritage and architectural planning, but his limited experience in museum programming and audience engagement raises questions about his ability to enhance the visibility and narrative of these under-visited sites, particularly given Compiègne's status as a major French royal residence.
