Emily Wilson to Retranslate Homer's Odyssey After Criticizing Nolan Film

Emily Wilson, a classicist from the University of Pennsylvania, is in the process of retranslating Homer's Odyssey, nearly a decade after her groundbreaking complete English translation by a woman in 2017. Currently, the new translation is about halfway finished and aims to be a comprehensive reworking, akin to her 2023 Iliad translation, incorporating additional lines for varied pacing and extensive endnotes. This development comes after her critique of Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of The Odyssey, which referenced her 2017 translation. In a review from July, she criticized the film's storytelling and character development. Wilson noted that her initial translation excessively used the term "slave" and suggested that the opening line would likely stay the same. Completion of her retranslation is anticipated to take several more years.
