Emeline Atwood's Debut Novel 'A Real Animal' Out July 2026

Emeline Atwood, a 30-year-old writer and poet based in Austin, is set to release her debut novel 'A Real Animal' in July 2026. The book, published by Penguin Random House, follows a 20-something woman's descent into animal instincts while navigating sex, family, assault, and cross-country moves, blurring the line between metaphor and supernatural. Atwood, who has no relation to Margaret Atwood, describes a unique writing ritual: she writes best while half-asleep, waking in inspirational spurts throughout the night. She has dreamed of publishing since before age 5 and maintains faith in her sensibility as a writer, inspired by Virginia Woolf's 'moments of being.' Atwood identifies disembodiment and technological mimesis as the biggest challenges for young writers today, warning against reliance on chatbots and loss of reading and writing skills. She recommends reading more poetry—citing Walt Whitman, Dionne Brand, and Emily Dickinson—and less non-fiction about optimization. The feature is part of the inaugural Young Writers list in collaboration with Montblanc.
